The learning continues: Fossils and bones

kids show what they hope is a fossil

"Is this a fossil? What about this?"

"No, afraid not. Keep looking."

We have to pick up a lot of pieces of slate and look very closely at each one.

And then someone shouts, "I found one!"

And sure enough, it's a fossilized fern leaf.

Next step? Wash the slate,

clean it with a q-tip so that the fossil will be more visible,

boy uses q-tip to clean the fossil

and then, with a piece of paper over the now clean and dry fossil, do a rubbing of it.

BONES: head bone, knee bone, back bone, and more

pile of bones

These bones were once a part of the skeletal structure of a deer.

Let's see what pieces we can join together. Can you find a ball and socket that will connect 2 leg bones? Can you reconnect the pieces of the spinal column?

As with a lot of things, it's often easier when we work together.

We all agree that bones are great fun to play with.
