HCEF is now on YOUTUBE. Find us at HopeThroughLearning

FYI

You'll want to read the Perspective piece Invisible students printed in the December 1 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Authors of the piece are Charlie LaVallee and Nicole Anderson, Regional Coordinator of the Homeless Children's Initiative - Allegheny Intermediate Unit.

Newly posted on youtube, by the Westminster College students who produced it, is a wonderfully well-done video focusing on HCEF Founder Joe Lagana:
"Not Your Average Joe." You'll be inspired. You'll be touched.

EITC grants have been received from BNY Mellon ($4,000), Direct Energy ($4,000), Dollar Bank ($5,600), Eat'n Park ($1,200), Equitable Gas ($12,000), Gateway Health Plan ($2,400), Hefren-Tillotson ($1,000), Mars National Bank ($500), PNC Alliance, LLC ($2,400), and UPMC ($4,000). These corporations have taken advantage of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development Educational Improvements Tax Credit. The funds support HCEF's CAPE "educational improvement" programming for the children we serve.

Use this link to our online speaker reservation form. Of course, we hope you will use it yourself to engage a speaker for one of your clubs or groups.

The Institute for Children, Poverty, and Homelessness (ICPH) has made available a .pdf version of its Fall 2011 issue of UNCENSORED – American Family Experiences with Poverty and Homelessness. See especially the article entitled "Building Bridges to Learning - Programs Focused on Reducing Academic Gaps for Homeless Children," which begins on page 8. HCEF's Education Program Manager, Laura Bailey, was interviewed for the article. Her observations are on pages 12 and 13 of the document.

AND

On the board minutes page of this website you'll find a link to an interview of Joe Lagana by Adrienne Hunter, President of the National Art Education Association. The topic: how art teachers can become aware of and respond to the special needs of children experiencing homelessness. Provided by permission of NAEA.

HCEF Advisor Brett Keisel was named the Steelers 2011 Man of the Year. See the Steeler's complete announcement here.

See the October 27 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article "Poverty indicators show Pa. has work to do; 19th in poverty, tied for last in keeping youth connected"

For those of you who were not able to attend the January 10 board meeting: HCEF received a check for $85,000 from the Haunted Acres at Hundred Acres Manor. Over its eight years of operation, the Haunted House has contributed $344,000 to HCEF.
